Going Out for an Enjoyable Trout River Fishing
Understanding the trout is of most important to go out for successful trout river fishing. Their laziness, not too smart and their preference to stay in moving waters or streams should be kept in mind. Lazy trout prefers to stay in moving water or streams, since this is the easiest way to catch food that comes along with the stream.
Do not make any move or gesture that may frighten the trout. Once it gets frightened, it lost its appetite and for sure it will not be in the mood to catch your life bait or take any lure. If you are spotted by a trout it will disappear to hide and you have to wait about 20 minutes until you can try to fish again at the same spot. It will be a waste of time.
Then, what is the first thing you need to go out for trout river fishing? Yes indeed you need a river. You can choose a river with natural trout in it, or a river which is stocked with trout. If you like bare nature and the harder way to catch trout which for you may be more challenging then you can choose the natural trout river. Please be aware that there is a set of fishing regulation in each state or province. Obtain this regulation from the respective state’s wildlife management and study them carefully to get familiar with the limitation and restrictions applied to the fishing resort or area.
It is good if you can make an initial visit to the river where you plan to fish. You can observe and look for good spots along the shoreline that are easy to access with slow moving parts of deepwater. Another good spot of the river are areas with altering deepness, from deep to shallow and vice versa. Converging streams is also a good spot to fish trout, since this is the favorite place for the trout with plenty of food to catch.
Knowing the place where you are going to fish, may provide you with clearer ideas on what you should prepare and bring along. A light tackle is usually the best option which consists of a rod and reel combo, test Fishing Line (4 – 8 lb), hooks (number 6 – 10), split shot sinkers and a net. The suggested reel for bait Trout Fishing is the closed faced reel, since it is not satisfactorily for spinner or other lures. The open faced reel works quite properly for both styles.
Use the kind of bait which is in conformance with the regulation. Three kinds of baits for trout river fishing are the life earthworms, salmon roe and corn kernels. Just to remind you, do not forget to attach a sinker when using bait. The bait should be placed at the bottom of the river and moves downstream by the flow of the current. This “moving” bait will attract the trout and will eventually take it.
You can also use small spinners, spoons or other lures. Take note that for fishing in small slow moving rivers, light lures are most appropriate, while in small faster moving rivers heavier lures are required.
So, it seems we have everything we need in hand. Let’s do the job. Go to your spot, get set and start casting. Trout are always facing upstream to wait for passed food carried by the current. That is why your best position is to stand a bit downstream, about 20 – 50 feet behind the trout, to avoid being spotted by the trout.
Start casting upstream passing the fish location and let the bait drift to the trout direction. Watch your rod tip. While the bait is drifting, your rod tip should be kept at about the face level and watch where the line is going. There might be small pulls on the rod tip, which is a sign that the bait is tasted by the trout or simply due to bumping a rock. A big pull on your rod tip is a glorious sign that you just have caught a trout. Congratulation!
