Salmon Fishing Outlook for Bodega Bay 2011 by Rocked45
Recreational Salmon Fishing is currently open and will run until September. For the past few years recreational salmon fishing season has been limited to just a few weeks. This year the salmon population has reached levels of over 720,000 fish, the highest predicted levels in over five years.
As of Mid June the Sport Fishing results have been mixed. Rough seas and high winds have prevented Sport Anglers and Party Boats from getting on the water as much as they’d like to. Weather in July, August and September should improve as the summer and fall weather patterns provide for more off shore wind patterns and better ocean conditions. One bonus of the early June windy conditions is an increase in upwelling. Wind driven currents off the coast of Bodega Bay create the movement of nutrient rich waters to the surface. These nutrients are utilized by phytoplankton and create the ideal conditions for production of ocean organisms up the food chain. One important element of this food chain is krill, one of the primary food sources for salmon and the source of the rich red color of wild salmon. Salmon fisherman are always on the look out for nutrient rich water which is has a darker green or brown tint. This “dirty water” as it is called is nutrient rich and is more likely to hold phytoplankton, krill and bait fish. These are areas where salmon are more likely to be feeding and more likely to be caught.
There are web sites which monitor the level of photosynthesis in the water and can be used to located the optimum conditions for salmon fishing. One of the sites is called TerraFin. Another source of information near Bodega Bay is the Bodega Bay Marine Lab. Utilize the “boon” portion of the web site for information of plankton levels.
Another important factor in salmon activity is water temperature. Spring ocean temperatures off Bodega Bay can be in the high 40′s but as the water warms up to the low 50′s the salmon numbers may increase in these warmer pockets.
